Classes are designed using a step by step teaching and learning process that builds upon previous skills. Typically, students take the beginner class more than once to get comfortable with the throwing process.

This class focuses on the fundamental skills such as centering, opening and raising, forming and trimming. Emphasis will be on using correct hand positions, creating appropriate thickness, understanding the importance of full revolutions as well as hand and finger pressure when centering, raising and forming a clay structure. The trimming process is essential to finishing a thrown piece by creating a foot and removing any excess clay. Students will learn how to apply both high and low fire glaze that includes brushing and pouring techniques. Cylindrical forms such as mugs with pulled handles, vases, and pitchers will be taught.
